DHA during pregnancy
Information letter by Progress Biotech LLC
Providing information about the usage mode and limitations for pregnant women in using DHA Algal Oil.
Recently we received a question that might be of interest of many people. The question concerns the necessity of DHA for a growing fetus. We already know that DHA is essential as building block for the brain and for nerve tissue. We also know that in many cultures and countries the daily intake of DHA is not sufficient. Therefore, there exists a serious reason to substitute this lack by the intake of DHA as a nutraceutical or food ingredient in processed food. Another form is taking DHA directly as food supplement.
Taking DHA directly as algal oil is the cleanest and easiest way to get the appropriate concentrations in human blood circulation. DHA can be used as oil directly or in capsules.
CELEX 2018:
Recommendations for the intake of algal DHA from Schizochytrium sp. by the EU (stated 23.7.2018):
Maximum levels daily intake
Food Supplements as defined in Directive 2002/46/EC
250 mg DHA/day for general population
450 mg DHA/day for pregnant and lactating women
Various newer studies show that the maximum level for pregnant and lactating women should be 600 mg DHA/day.
Studies showed a variety of effects of adequate maternal levels of DHA in newborns.
• Less early preterm births.
• Less newborns with (very) low birthweight.
• Better cellular immune response.
• Better brain maturity.
All studies underline the necessity of substitution with DHA.
