Inflammation is an important function of our immune system, which helps to eliminate pathogens such as bacteria and viruses. However, (excessive) inflammation can be damaging to the body as well. Omega-6 fatty acids are known for their pro-inflammatory properties, whereas omega-3 fatty acids such as DHA are known for their anti-inflammatory properties. As reviewed by P. Calder (2010), disorders where inflammation plays a key role may benefit from the anti-inflammatory properties of DHA.
